Back to Work..

We are returning to work three days a week.  We must go back full time to the office by July 1. It sucks. My office is stuck in the 1980s.  There is no reason for us to work in the office. I am polishing up the resume. My philosophy has always been to stay five years and find something new. It only takes five years to learn all you can. After that, you are spinning your wheels or playing it safe. I prefer the quiet of being at home as opposed to the cubical.

The owner said we need to be in the office to work but did not give any examples of how things didn't work out the past year. We even won awards from the customer in 2020. I need to balance my displeasure with going to the office with my goal of making as much money as possible in the next few years.

I am not in a hurry to retire, but I want to be in a position that I can if the need arises.

This is a common thing with bosses, and in my opinion it's just control-freakery in most cases. They miss being able to "supervise" all the time and force workers to abide by their various pointless rules.

As for polishing up the resume, this is the time for it. Not sure what kind of office work you do, but in many fields the demand for employees far exceeds the supply. If the current boss won't let you go on working from home, you can probably find someone who will.

  4. Good luck with your job search. I went back on March 9, and I dreaded it, but it has been okay. I think I am going to retire in two years, I am ready for a new chapter.

    1. I don't want to retire. I do want to do things differently, like remotely.

  5. Yeah... it will be difficult for me to ever work someplace that doesn't give me the flexibility to work remote.

  7. Gotta agree, there is no reason to in the office when you can do your job, and do it well, from home. I've been at home for 5 years now and always exceeded my performance metrics and am in my third role with my company. They just want to be able to manage people's time or something.

    1. It should be come into the office as needed, not just because the boss thinks it makes us more productive. It does not.

  9. I actually lucked out in that my last job and my current one weren't all too affected by this past year+. I managed to pull off a job change last August or so, and thankfully it went more smoothly than planned overall. Good luck with everything!

  10. Mebbe he just misses you? *Bwahahahaha* Seriously, some Bosses have nothing to really do if they don't have someone to Boss in the flesh, the Zoom just doesn't do it for them. Plenty of Work seems to be out there, I think the demand is higher that the supply of good workers right now and many are re-assessing their need to stay where ever they aren't delighted...
